Back in May I posted The Future of Storage, a brief talk written for a DARPA workshop of the same name. The participants were experts in one or another area of storage technology, so the talk left out a lot of background that a more general audience would have needed. Below the fold, I try to cover the same ground but with this background included, which makes for a long post.
This is an enhanced version of a journal article that has been accepted for publication in Library Hi Tech, with images that didn't meet the journal's criteria, and additional material reflecting developments since submission. Storage technology evolution can't be slowed down to the pace of peer review.
I'm David Rosenthal, and this is a place to discuss the work I'm doing in Digital Preservation.

The Four Most Expensive Words in the English Language
There are currently a number of attempts to deploy a cryptocurrency-based decentralized storage network, including MaidSafe, FileCoin, Sia and others. Distributed storage networks have a long history, and decentralized, peer-to-peer storage networks a somewhat shorter one. None have succeeded; Amazon's S3 and all other successful network storage systems are centralized.
Despite this history, initial coin offerings for these nascent systems have raised incredible amounts of "money", if you believe the heavily manipulated "markets". According to Sir John Templeton the four words are "this time is different". Below the fold I summarize the history, then ask what is different this time, and how expensive is it likely to be?

Storage Will Be A Lot Less Free Than It Used To Be
I presented our paper The Economics of Long-Term Digital Storage (PDF) at UNESCO's "Memory of the World in the Digital Age" Conference in Vancouver, BC. It pulls together the modeling work we did up to mid-summer. The theme of the talk was, in a line that came to me as I was answering a question, "storage will be a lot less free than it used to be". Lay people reading the press about storage, and even some "experts" writing in the press about storage, believe two things:
- per byte, storage media are getting cheaper very rapidly (Kryder's Law), and
- the demand for storage greatly exceeds the supply.

Talk at Fall CNI
I gave a talk at the Fall CNI meeting entitled Improving the Odds of Preservation, with the following abstract:
Attempts have been made, for various types of digital content, to measure the probability of preservation. The consensus is about 50%. Thus the rate of loss to future readers from "never preserved" vastly exceeds that from all other causes, such as bit rot and format obsolescence. Will persisting with current preservation technologies improve the odds of preservation? If not, what changes are needed to improve them?It covered much of the same material as Costs: Why Do We Care, with some differences in emphasis. Below the fold, the text with links to the sources.

Dan Geer at RSA
Dan Geer gave a must-read talk at the recent RSA conference. Dan is especially strong on the fragility of the systems upon which society is coming to depend, a theme that also ran through my friend Dewayne Hendricks' recent talk at Stanford's EE380 seminar series. Cloud For Preservation
Imagine you're responsible for preserving the long-established digital collection at a large research or national library. It is currently preserved in home-grown software, or off-the-shelf software that's been extensively customized, that you are responsible for running on hardware run by your institution's IT department. You are probably not a large customer of theirs. They are probably laying down the law, saying "cloud first", especially as you are looking at a looming hardware refresh. - The value that can be extracted from data decays rapidly with time.
- Thus companies would rather invest in current than archival data.
- Thus archival media and systems are a niche market.
- Thus archival media and systems lack the manufacturing volume to drive down prices.
- Thus although quasi-immortal media have low opex (running cost), they have high capex (purchase cost).
- Especially now interest rates are non-zero, the high capex makes the net present value of their lifetime cost high.
- Archival media compete with legacy generic media, which have mass-market volumes and have already amortized their R&D, so have low capex but higher opex through their shorter service lives.
- Because they have much higher volumes and thus much more R&D, generic media have much higher Kryder rates, meaning that although they need to be replaced over time, each new unit at approximately equal cost replaces several old units, reducing opex.
- Especially now interest rates are non-zero, the net present value of the lower capex but higher opex is likely very competitive.

Chia Network
